The setting for Bock and Harnick's 1958 Broadway musical is the underbelly of New York's boxing world and celebrates all its made-for-a-musical characters. It wraps them in the all-forgiving mantle of 1950s musical comedy - where everyone is ultimately loveable, where all is guaranteed to end well, and where the audience continually smiles even as their sides are splitting from laughter.
